Routes and Roots: Stitching round and round

Monday 15 April 10.30am - 4pm ABOUT THE WORKSHOP Janet has observed circles in many different contexts whilst walking the Outer Aylesbury Ring, from marks on the ground and in the trees, encircling footpaths, cyclical variations in the weather, the sound of country church bells rung in rounds and the memory of the continuum of generations that have come and gone across history. These elements will be the inspiration for exploring surface through stitching, with techniques including couching, whipping, knotting and weaving. ABOUT THE TUTOR Janet has a passion for drawing and stitching the infinite detail of organic surfaces. Drawing is fundamental to her practice and visual research is the means through which she develops practical work. With experience in ceramics, art and design, Janet constructs with fabric and thread, to create both 2D and 3D pieces. This process of making advances slowly over time, giving space to evaluate and adjust technique when necessary. The building blocks of countryside and organic structures develop slowly too, with weathering and seasonal adjustment adding variety and inspiration. Janet is an experienced tutor delivering courses throughout the UK. She is a member of the Buckinghamshire Craft Guild and the author of four books on Embroidery.

John Hackett Band (20 Apr)

Saturday 20 April | 8pm - 10.30pm | £15.50 std "The band have never sounded better, and they are musically as tight as a drum skin at present." John Hackett has been a much-loved and admired figure in the progressive rock scene since the mid-70’s; best-known for his flute work with his brother, former Genesis guitarist, Steve Hackett on albums such as Voyage of The Acolyte, Sketches of Satie and Please Don’t Touch. ‘Progressive’ music in our sense of the word is based on rock-solid song-writing coupled with hot jazz drumming, melodic, funky bass, outstanding guitar in the form of Nick Fletcher (often compared to the late great jazz-fusion maestro Allan Holdsworth), and John Hackett himself – whose flute playing has graced so many albums and travels with such ease between classical, folk and rock. Drawing on songs from John’s solo albums Checking Out of London and Another Life, the evening also features material from the band's debut, We Are Not Alone, the Hackett/Fletcher album Beyond the Stars and tunes for JHB's new released Autumn 2023 John Hackett - vocals, flute, keyboard Nick Fletcher - lead guitar Duncan Parsons - drums, vocals Jeremy Richardson - vocals, bass, acoustic guitar Read a recent review here https://tinyurl.com/2zhwzke9

'Elizabeth Fry - The Angel of Prisons' (at Friends Meeting House)

Three prisoners have a story to tell. It’s the story of Elizabeth Fry and how she changed prisons forever. But this is not a history lesson. You’ll hear both contemporary and historical language. You’ll see both modern-day and period mashup costumes. Because the question remains the same today as it did in Elizabeth Fry’s time: does prison actually work? This script-in-hand reading will be performed in the Friends Meeting House in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and will be followed by a Q+A with the cast and crew. Produced in partnership with Queens Park Arts Centre’s Unbound Theatre. The performance is ‘pay what you can’. As the capacity of the meeting house is limited, places must be reserved in advance. Otway & Barrett (3 May)

OTWAY AND BARRETT present their Half A Sentry Tour – the extra bonus shows for 2024 !! The main tour in 2023 was a great success. And John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett are still talking to each other so they have agreed to present a few more shows around the country during 2024. This magnetic bond still holds after more than 50 years of attempted escapes and still loved for their total in-yer-face originality, the contrast between the dead pan humour of Barrett and mad onstage antics of Otway are hilarious to watch. John’s lyrical genius and Willy’s outstanding musicianship (he seems to play almost every stringed instrument known to man, plus a few hybrids of his own making!) Ever keen to add a new dimension to the show, Willy has a new addition to his array of instruments. Beware the Moose Homp!!. Willy’s interest in making instruments began when he commandeered two guitars made by his dad in 1965. One from an old guitar neck and a scaffold plank which became affectionally known as the Les Dawson, and the other branded the Mk1 Schitstik electric slide of similar pedigree. These instruments were used on many of the early tracks, including Really Free and Racing Cars) Willy’s remark “this will be the last time that many of you will see us together again” was often hastily misinterpreted as the final throw of the dice, but the reason given “it’s not us packing up, it’s you lot dying off, you know who you are!” is often overlooked by eager scribes. And so the rumours abound. Earlier this year John celebrated his 5,000th gig to a packed house at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire. And if that’s not enough, we are now talking about DOCTOR JOHN – an Honorary PhD in Music by Oxford Brookes University.? “I’m really thrilled to be awarded this totally unexpected honour, especially as I failed all my A levels as I decided to concentrate on preparing for my burgeoning career as a rock star. To get this from Oxford Brookes 50 years later shows I did the right thing.” For any Otway/Barrett virgins out there who don’t know what to expect, be prepared for everything from bare-chested theremin playing to wah wah wheelie bin as the duo jump from one hit and 40 near misses to another: An amazing and irreverent performance by two master entertainers.

Skamungas (8 Jun)

A night with the Skamungas is a night not to be missed! If you thought you didn’t like ska and reggae this band might well change your mind, or even your life, with their infectious enthusiasm and unique take on those instantly recognisable ska and reggae standards. Expect a musical jaunt through the history of ska and reggae – do you know the difference? From 60s Caribbean artists such as Desmond Dekker, Toots and the Maytals, and Jimmy Cliff, through the 70s with Dave and Ansell Collins and the wonderful songs of 80s bands Madness, The Selecter, The Specials, and Bad Manners. Then on to the 90s and Reel Big Fish, and more recently, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and Paolo Nutini. Just to name a few! And that’s not all. The band in ska/reggae tradition takes classic pop and rock songs and feeds them through the Skamungas machine to be performed as though always intended as ska or reggae numbers. Their ska rendition of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” is a particular favourite as is “These Boots Were Made for Walking”, yes, the Nancy Sinatra number! In 2017 some very talented musicians from across the Home Counties came together to do something different. Skamungas was formed and rapidly achieved a great live reputation evidenced by headlining Astonbury 2017, their first festival, and Live In The Park 2018 in Aylesbury before 10,000+ people. The band was selected from hundreds of contenders to play PennFest 2018, on the bill with the likes of Kaiser Chiefs, Feeder and Manic Street Preachers. 2019 was a triumph of sell out dates, the band now playing far and wide across Southern England, continuing to headline festivals and being courted by ever bigger venues and clubs stretching from the south coast up through London to the Midlands. With a terrific brass section of trombone and tenor sax, driving drums and bass, rhythmic guitar and keyboards, harmonised backing vocals and a lead vocalist to die for, Skamungas is set to achieve even greater things. Please note, this will be a seated gig. Skamungas Follow Skamungas on Facebook.
