Wetfelting Textures (whole day workshop)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Wet Felting is the ancient art of turning sheep's wool into a stunning structural and tactile textile that can be used for a huge range of applications. Felt has a history of being used for shelter, comfort, insulation, fashion and more. It truly is a wonderful material!

This workshop will explore the use of templates and resists in wetfelting for creating surface texture that results in bold patterns and shapes in the handmade fabric. Perfect for anyone who's never wetfelted before, as well as those who have and want to know what else it can do.

In this workshop participants will first create small samples to experiment with the technique before using this new knowledge to create a larger piece that can later be used in a range of ways; sewn into a cushion cover or notebook cover, used as a patch on clothing or as a patchwork square, or displayed as a wallhanging. The tutor will bring a range of inspiration and advice on how to use your artworks. Beginners and those with experience welcomed.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

V Hayward has been felting for over 10 years, developing their skills in 3D felting as well as surface decoration techniques. V loves to experiment with adding different fibres and fabrics to see how the end result is affected and has an endless fascination with the way that structural 3D shapes can be formed just from wool fibres through the wetfelting process.

WHAT TO BRING

Materials (wool, selected silks, fabric scraps and more) will be provided, however you are welcome to bring any particular scraps of thin fabric (natural fibres such as cotton or silk are best) that you might want to try incorporating into your felt. There will be a lunch break in the middle of the session in the QPAC coffee bar. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase but you may also want to bring your own lunch with you.

    Design and Stitch - inspired by fashion artist Zandra Rhodes (one-day course)

    Friday 7th August | 10am - 3.30pm ABOUT THE WORKSHOP We will make simple linear marks on paper and explore methods of arranging them into patterns before interpreting the marks using creative hand stitch. Suitable for all levels. ABOUT THE TUTOR Janet Edmonds is a textile artist, tutor and author of 4 books. She has taught embroidery for C&G for many years and was awarded the medal for excellence and the Broiderers Prize in 2016. She is a member of the Bucks Craft Guild, Textile Study Group and the Chiltern Textile and Embroidery Group. Janet is an experienced tutor delivering courses throughout the UK. She is a member of the Buckinghamshire Craft Guild and the author of four books on Embroidery. WHAT TO BRING It is recommended you bring coloured crayons or pencils and some A4 paper or a sketch book as well as a simple sewing kit including sisors, a range of needles plus a small piece of cotton fabric (coloured or plain). You might find an embroidery hoop useful, but this is not required. There will be a lunch break in the middle of the session in the QPAC coffee bar. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase but you may also want to bring your own lunch with you.

    Shibori Fabric Dyeing (two-day course)

    Saturday 27 June and 4 July | 9.30am - 12.30pm TWO DAY COURSE ABOUT THE WORKSHOP Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that involves folding, twisting, and binding fabric to create unique patterns, primarily using indigo dye. This technique dates back to the 8th century and has evolved over time, becoming popular among artisans for its ability to create intricate and beautiful patterns. The process involves manipulating the fabric before dyeing, which prevents certain areas from absorbing colour, resulting in stunning designs. During this course, you will be guided step by step through a variety of Shibori techniques including: folding, binding, and resist-dyeing methods, heat-shrinking fabric to create three-dimensional effects, Kanoko (bound -resist) technique using inserts, Itajime (shape-resist) technique using wooden blocks and Nui (stitched resist) technique for detailed pattern work. Both cotton and polyester fabrics will be used to fully explore the possibilities. By the end of the workshop, you will have created 1 neckerchief featuring 3D textural effects and 4 unique napkins, each using different Shibori techniques. This class is suitable for beginners. ABOUT THE TUTOR Karina Thomas studied Constructed Textiles at the Royal College of Art, specialising in knitted and woven textiles for interior spaces. Her practice explores the language of textiles — where structure, tension, geometry, and repetition become tools for storytelling. Trained in fine-gauge knitting and weaving, she investigates the tactile and conceptual boundaries of textile surfaces, often positioning them as spaces where opposing forces coexist: the organic and the geometric, the domestic and the monumental, the superfine and the sculptural. Based at Culverton Farm in Risborough, she co-runs Black Swans Studios with artist Lisa Vaughan, offering workshops that interlace creativity, well-being, and community engagement. Alongside her studio practice, she has taught at several UK universities, including the Royal College of Art, and was Senior Lecturer in Textiles at Bucks New University for twelve years. Her clients and collaborators include Tom Dixon, The British Embassy, Ford, Arjo Wiggins, Harrods, Salt, and Clementine Blakemore Architects. WHAT TO BRING All materials and dyes are included in the workshop price. Snacks and refreshments will be available to purchase at the QPAC Coffee Bar.
