Landscape Painting (full-day course)
with Joseph Schneider
Saturday 16 May | 10am - 3pm
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
This practical course introduces a range of approaches to expand your understanding of landscape painting. Making a series of studies using a variety of drawing and painting approaches, you will respond to the theme of landscape and a sense of place. You will work directly on location in central Aylesbury in the morning and in the Queen's Park Art Centre studio in the afternoon to become more confident in making choices for developing your own artworks.
Using different painting and drawing mediums you will explore the landscape elements of light, space and mass. Making observed studies directly in the urban environment, and taking inspiration from your own painted studies and photographs, you will be supported to develop your own painted compositions. The work of relevant historical and contemporary artists working across urban and rural sites will introduce potential approaches to use within your own landscape painting.
ABOUT THE TUTOR
This workshop is led by artist Joseph Schneider whose 30 years of making and teaching with all ages gives him a passion for supporting everyone to believe in their artistic potential. His teaching is grounded in his own vibrant art practice using a range of techniques. He has appeared on Sky Landscape Artist of the Year and was awarded the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Carroll Award for young artists. He loves to share his excitement and knowledge about artists’ past and present and is skilled at making the most complex ideas accessible. His own lively artwork across portraiture, landscape and still-life is based on the discipline of working from observation as much as allowing for imagination to emerge from messy, exploratory processes.
WHAT TO BRING
Participants will need to bring an A4 or A3 sketchbook and basic drawing materials for use outside (eg. pencils, charcoal, pastels), plus a camera (either digital or part of a phone). You may also want to bring a portable, foldable stool if you have one.
For work back in the studio, basic painting materials (paints and brushes for either watercolour, acrylic or oil) will be needed plus either a canvas or board to paint on or watercolour paper (300gsm).
The Centre has some materials and paper that can be used on the day although quality and condition cannot be garunteed. There is also an art shop onsite that sells the required materials. Please contact foh@queensparkarts.com if you have any queries.
