Charcoal Summer School (2 day course)

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Charcoal is a wonderful medium for atmospheric and expressive landscape drawings. This two-day workshop is an opportunity to immerse yourself in exploring what it can do, guided and supported by charcoal artist, Liz Cotgreave.

During this two-day workshop you will try different ways of working with charcoal, including drawing with a cloth, creating light through erasure, using stencils, trying different types and orientations of paper, and more. You will get ideas for ‘finding what you want to draw,' see what happens as you experiment, and then use what you’ve learned to develop drawings of the landscapes that inspire you.

The workshop will include warm-up and exploratory activities, demos, and plenty of time for your own work with 1-2-1 support on hand. Bring along some landscape images that inspire or interest you (either printed out, or to use on your device if you prefer). Suitable for all levels whether you have never used charcoal before or know the medium and want to extend your skills.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Liz spends time outdoors soaking in the atmosphere of places, then brings photos and video back to her studio to inspire the next stage of her drawing practice. Using these as her starting point, she uses a range of playful techniques to see ‘where the drawing takes her’. Inspiration often comes from what happens by accident during this process.

WHAT TO BRING

The workshop fee includes all materials you need, but you may want to bring an apron with you as well as your inspiration images. Drinks and snacks are available from the Coffee Bar onsite but you may want to bring a packed lunch with you on each day.
