Introduction to Woodcarving (1-day workshop)
with Jeremy Turner
Monday 30 March | 10am - 4pm
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Jeremy will introduce you to woodcarving with a taster project that will enable you to carve a relief, or a dish. The tutor will supply the tools, demonstrate techniques, and demonstrate how to keep your tools razor sharp. To inspire you Jeremy will show his collection of carved objects and provide interesting books and magazines. You may complete your piece by applying tung oil for a natural finish or paint it with watercolour.
With this experience you can take these first steps further to develop your own projects and even join the Monday Woodcarvers!
ABOUT THE TUTOR
"Following my sculpture degree in 1970 I went off track for some years learning about building and carpentry, became a woodwork teacher in 1977, then started carving seriously in 1985. Wood as a material, the tools to cut and shape it, the smell of it, having to work slowly and deliberately, then adding colour to the play of light and shadow - all this centres me and grounds me in this physical world. While I love making functional bowls and dishes I use relief carving in wood as the language and medium to reflect and comment on the things that we celebrate and the issues we worry about today. My imagery comes from the things around us and from the natural forms of plants and wildlife."
