Raising the Surface with Stitch

Sat 1 Feb 10.30am - 4pm ABOUT THE WORKSHOP This workshop explores surface texture using raised stitch techniques. There are many options from simple couching to more complex stitches that mix whipping, knotting and weaving to achieve the desired effect. Manipulating the background fabric can also be employed to add a raised surface into which further stitching can be worked. Working by hand, we will master a few of these exciting methods to create a rich and textured effect. ABOUT THE TUTOR Janet has a passion for drawing and stitching the infinite detail of organic surfaces. Drawing is fundamental to her practice and visual research is the means through which she develops practical work. With experience in ceramics, art and design, Janet constructs with fabric and thread, to create both 2D and 3D pieces. This process of making advances slowly over time, giving space to evaluate and adjust technique when necessary. The building blocks of countryside and organic structures develop slowly too, with weathering and seasonal adjustment adding variety and inspiration. Janet is an experienced tutor delivering courses throughout the UK. She is a member of the Buckinghamshire Craft Guild and the author of four books on Embroidery
